Cheap Booze
I walked the aisles of the liquor store searching for whiskey, after not having a drink of alcohol in Iraq for a year, and found side by side: Jack Daniels and Jim Beam. Beam was $2 less, so I chose it, a 2 liter bottle of coke and a bag of ice. I came back to the barracks and proceeded in consuming the entire bottle of Beam throughout the night with my friend. I woke up the next day at sunset with the feeling of nausea and pain, realizing the huge mistake in my discounted purchase that resulted in the nastiest hangover ever. Now I know that Jim Beam is a bad quality whiskey for its price.
The Beam bottle came with a handle and it had a long narrow neck, bulky squared body and a white label with black lettering. The liquor is a dark caramel color and it changed a little bit darker after adding a splash of coke to my drink. All together, it was a sight for sore eyes to a 22 year old that was deprived of alcohol for so long.
Beam has a strong whiskey smell. It’s the type of smell that only a whiskey drinker can appreciate. Non-drinkers usually describe it as smelling horribly strong.
Beam taste exactly how it smells, strong. Drinking it straight, as a shooter or on the rocks is nearly unbearable. The strong taste is the reason I need the splash of coke and ice. This makes it a smoother drink.
The glass full of Beam, coke and ice is cold and wet to the touch. It’s a little bit slippery and about 12 ounces heavy. The burning sensation down my throat and into the pit of my stomach makes my entire body warm and relaxed.
The flow of liquor being poured into the glass begins to create a jingling sound when the ice bounces off the sides of the glass. Each swallow from my drink, I make a gulp sound as it goes down my throat. On occasion, I have a shot and make a loud banging sound from the glass shooter slamming against a wood countertop.
Even with the love I have for whiskey and coke, Beam has altered my mindset. Beam isn’t as good in quality liquor as Jack Daniels and not much cheaper in price. After the hangover I experienced from a night with Beam, I can’t drink the brand anymore. Beam left an endless bitter taste in my mouth. The thought of it makes me nauseous and shiver. Now my whiskey brand of choice has been permanently switched to Jack Daniels. I’ve drank the same amount of Jack Daniels in one night as I did with Jim Beam and I haven’t had a hangover near the intensity that Jim Beam has given me.
