Police Corruption Cycle
The lust that power can bring is irresistible for most people. A simple person with a minimal education level is usually never given the opportunity to experience power at any level in their lifetime. But in the position of a cop, power is exactly the situation encountered. The police corruption cycle is dictated by the human influence element.
Corrupt cops don’t start off their careers being bad. It’s a series of bad decisions that spin out of control, until they can’t recognize themselves from doing right or wrong. Bad cops believe it’s difficult or impossible to make the right decisions during the scope of their job and still be effective in the performance of their daily duties. Good decisions aren’t only the correct way to conduct business in law enforcement, but they’re expected of. Cops are entrusted highly by the public they serve and vested with great powers to perform their duties effectively and properly.
Mayes, D. Clayton. Director of the College of the Desert- Public Safety Academy says, “The corruption cycle begins with the most simple of choices a cop can make that doesn’t seem to be an issue. The smallest unethical decisions can snowball into a serious corruption scandal.” This is a good catch, to simplify the complex corruption issue. Rafael Perez, Ex-LAPD cop says, “The lines between right and wrong became fuzzy and indistinct….My job became an intoxicant that I lusted after…I can only say that I succumbed to the seduction of power….Used wrongfully it is a power that can bend the will of a man to satisfy a lustful moment…The moment you cross that first line, it will be impossible to step back.” This came from the most corrupt cop in the LAPD’s history and sounds like it is very accurate considering he fell into the corruption cycle trap.
Police corruption must always take into consideration the human influence element. Each individual’s past life experiences, which create their own moral and ethical foundation. Once that foundation is learned from the individual, then an expert opinion can be made about the bad actions committed by the corrupt cop. Not using the corrupt cop’s past life experience as an excuse for doing wrong, but to better understand why the bad decisions were made.
The experts make good points with their opinions. This is a complicated subject that hasn’t done justice, when its been over simplified. However, if cops live their lives in a respectable way and conduct themselves properly then pitfalls that the corruption cycle throws at individual cops, will be a non issue. It’s a nice idea but is it really achievable for people whom live in our society?
Corruption seems to be as simple as black and white on the surface. But it has lots of grey areas because outside influences are very powerful, like: sex, money, friendship, drugs and alcohol. All of these influences can help in forcing a cops hand toward making a bad decision and then continue with nothing but bad decisions. The once good cop ends up believing that bad decisions will be justified with a good outcome. The now corrupt cop is always surprised when it all turns bad and the shit hits the fan after the truth of their wrong doing comes to light. Then suddenly the corrupt cop realizes that although they were very powerful, they were never untouchable.

big sis' grad & the stagecoach music fest

I missed another day of class this past weekend to attend my older sister's graduation from the University of Phoenix online school. The ceremony took place at the San Diego Convention Center and it was long and boring. They let one of their graduates, whom is a aspiring rapper, perform his original song. It was so bad, I thought the audience was going to begin booing the guy. I had to endure his performance twice that day because both my sister and sister-in-law were graduating at different times in the day and he was greeted with the same reception from the audience. We then had a family party in Del Mar with our own hired taco guy from Tijuana. The following day I went to the Stagecoach with my sister and her husband. There were lots of sexy cowgirls, good food and music. It was a good time but I can't drink alcohol until July 7th because of the effects I would have from a medication I'm taking, I can only have so much fun without alcohol. Oh well.

Coachella Fest

I skipped class this past Saturday to attend the 10th annual Coachella music & arts festival @ the Indio polo grounds. I went to the festival all 3 days and it didn't disappoint. It was a blast and the temperatures were actually bearable this year. I went with my girlfriend and friends. We got up close on Saturday night for M.I.A and The Killers concerts. It was intense, crowded and hot there. But it was worth experiencing it once in my life. From now on, I think I'll continue to watch from the back where it is more relaxed and comfortable to watch the concert. Paul McCarthy was a really fun concert. And The Cure was good too. But my favorite of the weekend was on Friday evening when Franz Ferdinand played an awesome concert. And to complete the weekend, I broke up with my girlfriend. So now I'm newly single.

Mid-term

I'm trying to figure out how most of my classmates finished their test so quickly. Did they come to class with essays already prepared? Did they prepare their essays and write them in class from memory? Or are they just that much quicker than I am at writing essays? I spoke to one classmate today and he told me he came to class with 2 prepared essays to turn in. I guess I will bring prepared essays to class next time we have a test. When in Rome, right!

munchausen mystery

This is an unusaul subject matter and interesting as well. It's about crazy people whom fake terminal illnesses at hospitals around the world. The crazy people go to extreme measures to appear ill. They get off on wasting professionals time. If anything, I thought it would have been to be cared for by cute nurses. But it had nothing to do with sexual desires at all. It was worse than that. They do it out of sheer boredom and untamed rage. I'm not trying to understand these Munchausen patients. I'll leave that to the psychologist to figure out. Hell, I think those guys are usually just as crazy as the Munchausen patients.

I am a little bit worried about the upcoming essay we're required to write for class. It seems to be more difficult to write. The topic that I'm considering is the pathway to police corruption. The reason for my interest is because I'm pursuing a law enforcement career. I have some knowledge on the subject and have some personal sources that I can interview for the essay. The only problem is the broad field of the subject of police corruption. I'm trying to figure out if I can fit the important issues into one essay. I'll need to plan it out well to be able to prove the right points about the subject.

runners high

The essay about running was written very well. The description is pretty accurate for someone that enjoys running. I am a really good runner, but I need to listen to music from my MP3 player or talk to a running partner to enjoy the experience. That is the only way I can block out the boring experience of running. The other way I can enjoy running without music or talking is racing against other runners. But I can agree with the author's example of runners high and having an out of body experience during the run with no memory of the course traveled. It does happen when a runner is fit and it doesn't happen when the runner is unfit.
